Phoenix of the Tropical Cloud Forest
Experience a close encounter with the Phoenix of our tropical cloud forest, The Quetzal (holy bird of the Mayans), visiting the Trogon Lodge natural trails, located near Cerro de La Muerte, in San Gerardo de Dota at 7000 ft. altitude.
3 days / 2 nights package tour

Day 01: Starting early in the morning we will pick you up at your hotel in San Jose, we then depart heading southeast. In just one and half-hours we will be arriving at the Trogon Lodge. Lunch and dinner are included. Afternoon is at your leisure to experience the local culture and habitat. Take a stroll on the beautiful grounds, walk through our trail, or just relax with the flow of the near by river. Excellent opportunities for the birdwatcher to view a great amount of hummingbirds and of course the Quetzal. For the nature lover and the birdwatcher this is a paradise. Overnight at Trojon Lodge or similar

Day 02: After a hearty breakfast, we will explore and be overwhelmed at the same time, the largest protected area in all Costa Rica. The area that you will visit is one of the highest points of this Talamanca Mountain Range. 

 This area has been researched for years by our most dedicated naturalist experts, who have discovered a rare ecological niche in which these birds may be found year round. You are invited to hike this niche, part of the largest protected area in all of Costa Rica (a total of 95,000 hectares are protected in 13 different units.) The area we will visit is one of the highest points in the Talamanca Mountain Range, a large tectonic formation reaching 10,000 feet above sea level and forming part of the Continental Divide.

You will be overwhelmed by the variety of flora and avifauna in this area . . . the Mountain oak forest, which is the principal forest type of high elevations. The dominant trees are magnificent oaks reaching 125 feet in height, like the wild brazilletto and winter's bark tree.

The under-story has an abundance of moss festoons, bromeliads with red pigmented leaves, like the escalonia. This makes a perfect environment for the crowned when thrush, large-footed finch, and sooty robin, just to name a few species. Two basic horseback riding tours provide excellent riding for both experienced and inexperienced riders. Both tours feature scenic trails through this natural paradise. For the hiker there are paths along the rivers and lakes that offer much more than the quetzal in this magnificent reserve. All tours can be arranged through the Lodge.
Overnight at Trogon Lodge- all meals.

Day 03: During the morning we will be getting another closer look at all the natural surroundings and the flora and fauna. After lunch, we'll leave Trogon Lodge and drive back to the Capital. You will arrive at your hotel in San Jose in the early evening.
