Rincon de la Vieja National Park Tour (E,G,L)
Rincon de la Vieja is an active volcano located 16 miles north from Liberia in Guanacaste. The volcano is 400 km2 with a large number of fumaroles and hot springs on its slopes. It’s most recently eruption was in February 1998.
The name, Rincon de la Vieja, means the old woman's corner; according to locals, the indigenous people named the volcano after an old witch on top of the mountain who sent columns of smoke into the air when she was angry. Other version says it was a kind old woman on the same spot and the smoke was from her cooking fire as she prepared meals for weary travelers.
The hike is rigorous but spectacular, starts in tropical moist forest and as you climb, continues into low wet forest where the trees are covered with epiphytic vegetation. There are 257 species of birds that have been recorded and a great number of insect species; the park protects the largest population of wild purple orchid, the nation flower in Costa Rica.
This is one of the hotter drier areas of Costa Rica, and the whole region around Rincon de la Vieja has more predictable seasons than the rest of the country. The chance of rain is much less during the dry season from December to April, but the higher you climb, the more likely you are to get wet... any time of the year. What to bring: Hiking shoes, comfortable clothes, sun block, insect repellent, hat, binoculars and camera. Includes: Transportation, bilingual guide, entrance fee and lunch.
Duration: 8 hours. |

The highest peak of Rincon de la Vieja stands at 1916 meters above sea level.
Rincon de la Vieja is the most accessible of the volcano's in the range, although it is still remote enough that is has remained a natural wilderness, with as yet little adverse impact from tourism. The National Park is also part of the World Heritage Site, the Guancaste Conservation Area.
The name Rincon de la Vieja is translated as 'Old Woman's Nook' and refers to the legend of a young girl whose lover was thrown into the volcano by her father, after which she became a recluse with healing powers.
Santa Maria Peak is the highest peak of Rincon de la Vieja at 1916 meters, however the most active area is on Von Seebach peak which contains a crater with an acidic lake. This you can climb up to - see below.
