 Jaco Beach in Costa Rica is one of the first real Costa Rican beach towns. In the past Jaco was mainly a spot for national tourism, many Costa Ricans would come on the weekend from San Jose to Jaco (1.5 hour drive) to enjoy a family weekend on the beach. In the last few years Jaco has gone through a major development stage, many new Jaco hotels were built,new restaurants opened and tour operators established their business in Jaco offering tourist a large number of activities to enjoy while in staying in Jaco.
Today Jaco is famous for its surf in Jaco Beach and in the surrounding beaches, such as Playa Hermosa (in English the “Beautiful Beach”) Esterillos Oeste, EsterillosCentro and Playa Bejuco. Most of the good surf spots are with in less than 40 minutes by car. Jaco also excels in its night life scene and in the variety of good restaurants that the city offers.

Jaco Beach offers many activities and fun tours to enjoy, there is something for every taste, family tours, adventure tours (Canopy Tours, Crocodile Man Tour, ATV (Quad Tours). Jaco is famous for the abundance of water related tours and activities, such as River and Sea Kayaking, Surf Lessons, White Water Rafting (Half Day and Full Day).

A laid back bustling town, Jaco is one of the most popular Costa Rican beaches. Located in the North of the Puntarenas province along the country’s central Pacific Coast less than 2 hours from San Jose, Jaco has the reputation of being a ‘party beach’ with an excellent nightlife. However, the fun here is casual and relaxed, and the people here are nice and friendly. One of this town’s major attractions is the fantastic surfing here as the waves are consistently big and the breaks are very good. A yearly international surf contest is also held in the nearby Playa Hermosa that attracts a huge number of surfers from all over the globe to this beach. 
Easily accessible by all, Playa Jaco is about 3 km long and is best reached by catching an International flight to San Jose and then driving out here. The areas to the north and south of Jaco are some of the most picturesque and cleanest, with stunningly gorgeous panoramic ocean views.
You need to be careful about swimming here, as riptides are quite common along the beach shore.
 North Puntarenas, Costa Rica (Central Pacific & Nicoya Peninsula)
Lying to the west and stretching for along two thirds of the country’s Pacific Coast, Puntarenas is the largest province in Costa Rica. Sitting some 75 miles west of the capital city San Jose, this province’s main attractions are its friendly beaches and slow paced lifestyle. Around 11,277 sq km in size, Puntarenas extends all the way to Costa Rica’s southern border with Panama. Home to a fantastic array of flora and fauna, this province is great if you want to have an incredible eco-adventure or just lie back and take in the gorgeous surroundings.
Since Puntarenas is so huge and covers an extensive area, the best way to take in the wonderful sights and sounds here, is by dividing the province into two parts. North Puntarenas extends right up past the Manuel Antonio National Park, while South Puntarenas includes Drake Bay, the Osa Peninsula and places like Pavones.

There is much to see and do in North Puntarenas from long easy walks on the beach to riding the white water rapids that flow down the Cordillera de Tilaran. Ideal for those who prefer fast or slow paced vacations, North Puntarenas has a number of beautiful national parks and refuges that one can visit to enjoy the beauty of this province. The regions most popular attraction is easily the Parque National Manuel Antonio, with its superb white sand beaches and lush green mountains. Within walking distance from dozens of fine hotels and restaurants, this park attracts people of all ages.
For those who want some more action, after spending the day wildlife viewing head north to Jaco Beach, a great party-oriented resort town. For those who are interested in catching some good waves, head down south to Dominical or visit Mal Pais on the Nicoya Peninsula. There are also a few uncrowned beaches that stretch down the coast. Hidden by patches of forest land, these beaches are paradise for those who want some peace and quiet. While the coastline has strong waves and is great for surfing, it does produce strong rip tides, making it quite treacherous for swimmers. |
